Instructions:

  1. Pop the Popcorn
Place a standard lunch-size paper bag on its side and fold the opening closed twice. Place fold-side down in the microwave. Microwave on high for 2–3 minutes, stopping when there are 2–3 seconds between pops.
  2. Season and Serve
Carefully open the bag away from you — steam will escape. Drizzle with 5 ml (1 tsp) avocado or olive oil if using, sprinkle with salt to taste, seal the bag, and shake to coat. Serve immediately.
Why These Ingredients
Common Mistakes, Notes, Prep in Advance, Storage, Swaps & Tips

Common Mistakes:

  • Walking away from the microwave. Popcorn can go from perfectly popped to burnt in seconds. Stay nearby and listen for the popping to slow down.
  • Not folding the bag tightly enough. A loosely folded bag can open during cooking and scatter kernels inside the microwave.
  • Microwaving for too long. Stop as soon as the popping slows to 1 to 2 seconds between pops.
  • Using a bag that is too small. A standard lunch-size bag gives the popcorn enough room to expand. A smaller bag may burst open during cooking.
  • Adding wet toppings before popping. Only add oil before popping. Add all other seasonings after the bag comes out of the microwave.

Notes:

  • Every microwave is different. Start checking at 2 minutes and adjust the time based on your machine.
  • A few unpopped kernels at the bottom of the bag are completely normal. Do not keep microwaving to pop them as the rest will burn.

Tips:

  • For the most evenly seasoned popcorn, add seasonings while the popcorn is still warm and shake well immediately after seasoning.
  • Use fresh popcorn kernels for the best pop rate. Old or stale kernels will have a higher rate of unpopped kernels.
